Akagera National Park lies along Rwanda’s eastern border and is the country’s only savannah park. Though smaller than the vast reserves of neighboring Kenya and Tanzania, Akagera offers Rwanda’s best opportunity to see Africa’s classic big game. Here you can encounter giraffes, hippos, buffalos, zebras, and occasionally lions and elephants roaming through the open plains and wetlands.
Because of its compact size, one or two days are usually enough to enjoy rewarding game drives, with an optional extra day for a guided walking safari. Akagera also combines perfectly with Rwanda’s other major attractions — Volcanoes National Park for gorilla trekking and Nyungwe Forest for chimpanzee tracking — making it an ideal addition to a complete Rwandan safari experience.
